Why Real Madrid Have 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Brahim opted to play for Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club chase future success.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he said following the win at Manchester.
