When Swimmers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Picture Captures Lifeguard Sprinting ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, describes the famous shoreline as her personal space. On a recent weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, noticed pops echoing around the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks on display told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, speaking to a duo who had run up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up from behind. The person was a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the direction that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He was sprinting at something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just totally maximum effort racing.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of acts of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and paramedics caring for many those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the location of the attack serving as a temporary treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, for instance going into the ocean to assist people needing help.

In the days after the events, statements of appreciation flooded in. An online statement expressed gratitude for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “kindness will always triumph over hatred”.

The squad of beach patrol published a statement, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your kind words and support. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our responders,” the group stated. “In time, we will tell our tales in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the instant the violence commenced through to late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is incredible,” stated a mayor.

“These individuals show dedication every day in ensuring our iconic coastlines protected for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the atrocity of this heinous tragedy, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much light we have seen in the presence of such evil.”
