The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Incredible Fan Response

Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.

“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.

“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
