The Hit Drama Confirmed for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.
Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
