The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
