Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Squad
The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion indicates that the tourists will delay until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable decision.
Spin Options Weighed
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they come out and excel out here.”
