Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

There are "no preparations" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has stated.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a meeting was not "necessary".

The administration did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pushed him to relinquish large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Yet, on this week Trump embraced a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the conflict on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against halting the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, indicating that freezing the front line would merely represent a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that involve the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky said discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unscheduled call with Trump recently occurred before rumors that the United States was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he commented.
