Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
