McLaren Points Finger at Rival Drivers for Norris-Piastri Incident

Tire detaches from McLaren after impact between team drivers

A wheel detaches from the McLaren of Lando Norris after he collided with team-mate Piastri at the opening of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

McLaren F1 team leaders Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to rival drivers for the collision between Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

Piastri, leading Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, bounced into his fellow McLaren driver after hitting Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.

The collision eliminated both team drivers out of the event, along with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Crash

Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, commented to broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "amateur hour", stating: "Clearly Nico drove into Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."

The team team principal Andrea Stella added: "The reaction is that we are displeased that we didn't have the chance to race."

"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of expertise don't act with justful prudence. Go to the initial turn, ensure you avoid harming competitors and continue."

The team clarified that the team principal was mentioning both Hulkenberg and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Incident

However, former champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he chose to cut back to try to pass his teammate.

Piastri had a stronger launch than the Briton and initially competed on the outer side on the ascending entry to the corner.

However he then moved inside in an effort to get a run on Norris on the way out, only to collide with Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to move inside on Lando and we were both very far from the corner apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."

His teammate commented: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Further back things happened and I just was unfortunate and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very fast from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had earned a season-best fourth place, said: "Major disappointment. All the strong performance from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."

"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and way out of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Oscar steered inward and the collision was unavoidable."

Aftermath and Team Response

The team will review the crash with their racers but only after the race weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on Saturday.

The team principal said: "In general disappointed but we accept it, we are now focusing on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the possibility to compete, race normally and utilize our performance."

"The points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A little more care would be beneficial for all involved."

Standings Impact

The sprint event was taken by the Max Verstappen, who closed in on both team racers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three behind of the Briton.

Stella said: "The consequence is what the maths show - we lost eight points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled drivers. We anticipate just some normal racing."

Verstappen said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
