Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their league season proved no match even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
