At least thirteen people perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
