An Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book lodging when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. Not knowing how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours somewhere that stayed open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for acing the admissions interview the next day, yet, as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place because a female student spotted me loitering in the city and asked if everything was alright. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she said I could crash on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. She even offered some food: one of the filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a young woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met sleep on her floor. At that time I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not study at ANU, and I never saw the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her good deed tenfold. Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.
