A Pig's Tale: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a first responder, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
